Description

In this lesson students will learn new vocabulary in context of success. They will watch the TED Talk, after they will be exposed to various activities with language related to the topic. Freer practice will help them utilise vocabulary they will have learnt during the lesson

Procedure

1Setting the context (2-5 minutes) • To familiarise the students with the topic

Discussion, eliciting the meaning of TL Success/ Failure Form Pronunciation Materials: on the board

2. Famous people’s quotes (7-10 minutes) • Raise interest in the topic, check which vocabulary related to the topic students are already familiar with

Students read the quotes, check if they understand the words in bold and discuss the meaning with their partners. Then they discuss wit h the partner the quote which they liked most of all and say why they like it. Materials : printout

3. Matching pre-listening activity (5-10 minutes) • To let students check/deduce the meaning of the target language in bold

Students are exposed to the TL in context of the TED talk (pre-listening). They match the words with the meanings and then check their answers with their partners. The right answers are presented in the board. Materials: a printout

4. Watching TED Talk (5-5 minutes) • To expose the students to the video with TL presented in a previous stage. Listening for gist.

The teacher checks if students are familiar with TED Talks. Students watch the TED talk, check if they can identify and understand TG in context.

5. Post-listening group discussion (5-7 minutes) • To give students an opportunity to express their critical thinking using TG, to check if students are aware of pronunciation of TL

Students discuss 2 questions related to the main idea about Success the speaker shared in the TED talk. The teacher monitors and provides micro-teaching in groups Materials: printout

5. Freer speaking practice (5-7 minutes) • Expose SS to key phrasal verbs and phrases from the TED Talk, let them use them in personal context

The teacher explains the meaning of TL by miming and eliciting from the whole class. The students interview each other and utilise the TG in their answers.

Checking what we’ve learned (3-5 minutes) • To check if students can produce the target language ( pronunciation) correctly and make them feel a sense of accomplishment

The teacher provides feedback on some mistakes during speaking to raise ss awareness. Then the teacher points to the same 2 words ( success and failure) and asks the group to pronounce them. The teacher checks the students what the criteria of success for them are and finishes the lesson.
