Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

• Teacher establishes a discussion by asking a question 'Have you ever been abroad?' 'where have you been? with whom?' • In pairs SS talk about the countries they have been to. / Teacher monitors in the meanwhile. • For extension, pairs swap and tell each other about their other partner's experience.

Test #1 Mexico Quiz (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

• Teacher asks general ideas about Mexico. 1. What do you know about Mexico? 2.What is Mexico famous for? 3. Do you like Mexican food? • SS may (if they know information about Mexico!) talk in groups about the previous questions. • Teacher chest a hand-out about Mexico, asking SS to complete the gaps with a/ the or -. • To start with SS work individually, then check their answers with their group. • In the meanwhile Teacher writes the answers on the board.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Meaning: • Teacher pins Point to the examples on the board from the previous task, and asks CCQs: 1. when we used (a) do we know exactly which traffic problems they are talking about? (No) 2. Do we use (a) with countries we know? (No) 3. Do we use (a) before languages, e,g, English? (No) 3. when we use (The) do we know the exact thing we are talking about? (yes) 4. Do we use it to talk about unknown things? Form: • Teacher elicits the form and writes it under the written examples on the board. • Teacher asks what parts of speech for each word in the structure. Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

• Teacher chests the handout. • Teacher asks SS to write a/ the in the correct places in the sentences individually. (Teacher points to the example in the task, so SS have a clue on what to do). • In pairs SS check their answers. • Teacher monitor. • Teacher provides an answer key.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

• In pairs, SS chose/ think about a country. • Pairs go online and search for information about the country they have chosen. • Teacher clarify that SS should consider these information when searching (borders, language, population, famous people, public transportation, food...) • Teacher sets a time limit (3 - 4 minutes) for SS to surf the internet. • Teacher reminds SS to take notes individually. • (Now) once SS finish, teacher divides the pairs into A,B,C... As then work together and so do Bs, and Cs. • In turns SS tell each other about the collected information without naming the country, so the other pair guesses the country. • Teacher goes around and monitors.
