In this lesson, students learn about 3 explorers through a jigsaw reading and phrasal verbs used in the context of travel.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about explorers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of phrasal verbs in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows the Ss some photos of famous explorers and tries to elicit information about them and what they might have done.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The T pre-teaches some of the vocabulary in the text to get students.

While-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with a chance to practice scanning for specific information

T divides the class into groups of 3 students and assign a part of the text to each in a group. Students are given time to fill their chart with the appropriate details. After they finish, they help each other fill the test of the chart. Then, Ss are given time to scan the other texts to find answers to the questions in the ex. 2C.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss are asked to respond to the text by answering the following question: which explorer achieved most? Ss exchange their answers.

Vocabulary (5-10 minutes) • to practice the use of phrasal verbs

Ss scan the text they have read and find the phrasal verbs in the text before they move to another exercise to match their meaning. The final stage is to provide some controlled practice on the phrasal verbs they learned,
