Description

In this lesson students will practice their listening and speaking skills to talk about different food and drinks using UK currency in order to tell their prices in the context of a canteen.

Main Aims

  • Students will have practiced controlled speaking and listening for specific informationin the context of food and drink, and prices in a canteen.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice the use of 'how much is....?' When dealing with currency.

Procedure

Stage 1 (1-2 minutes) • Make it sure that students have their names written in front of them for nomination

Ensure that the students' cards are in front of them. Remix the students in order to ensure that they work with different groups.

Stage 2 (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the pound symbol to students and ask them what does it stand for. Give the students some real pounds and make them discuss the currencies. Display the prices in exercise 1 on the whiteboard and ask the students to put the words with numbers (group work). Ask the students to practice saying them in pairs. Drill the prices chorally.

Stage 3 (5-8 minutes) • To practice listening for specific information

Tell students they are going to listen to some people speaking and they are going to hear 6 prices. They should write them down as they listen. Ask the students to work in pairs and check their answers. Write numbers 1-6 on the whiteboard and give out pens to students to write their answers on the whiteboard.

Stage 4 (10-15 minutes) • Prepare the students for the controlled activity to practice controlled speaking

Show the students the menu. Tell them to match the food and drink to the pictures in pairs. Model and drill the items that the students didn't say very well. Point to the picture and say "what's this? Through exercise 3 demonstrate how to do the activity using the dialogues.ask the students a couple of questions with "how much is a....?" Ask the students to do the exercise in pairs

Stage 5 (10-15 minutes) • Practice writing and dialogues

Show the students the dialogues and tell themthat they are going to listen and complete them. Hand out the dialogues and tell the students to read through them. Notice that all of them have finished and ask them if they are ready. Play the CD. Ask them to check their answers in pairs? Ask the students to practice the dialogue in pairs. Tell the students to write another dialogue in a canteen.
