Description

In this lesson the students will learn the meaning, form and pronunciation of third conditional sentences. First they will read a paragraph which we will use to elicit third conditional meaning and form. Then they will match and complete different third conditional sentences. Lastly they will speak by using third conditional forms.

Materials

Abc What happened to Ms June Booker?
Abc Sentence matching

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of third conditional sentences

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students to do detailed reading
  • To provide fluency and accuracy when speaking by using third conditional sentences

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will stick the picture of the text with Ms Books lying in the hospital bed with the frying pan at her side. I will make the students talk about the picture for a couple of minutes before getting into the text.

Exposure (1-2 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

I will give the handouts containing the text. I will give the instructions by saying, "On the handouts, you are going to read only the first paragraph. You have one minute." I will check their understanding through ICQs.

Highlighting (5-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

When they finish reading, I will draw a timeline and mark "now" and the past events on it, by eliciting from the students. The events are "I bought a pan", "I did lots of shopping", "I couldn't carry the bags and the pan", "I dropped the pan on my foot". On the timeline: "Why did I dropped the pan on my foot?" "Because I couldn't carry the bags and the pan." So,"If I had carried the bags and the pan, I wouldn't have dropped the pan on my foot." I will stick the paper slips on the WB. On the timeline: "Why I couldn't carry the bags and the pan?" "Because I did lots of shopping." So, "If I hadn't done lots of shopping, I would have carried the bags and the pan." I will stick the paper slips on the WB. I will mark the first event on the timeline (I bought a pan), and I will ask the students to mak a sentence with it. If I hadn't bought a pan, I wouldn't have dropped the it on my foot. I will stick the paper slips on the WB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning through CCQs on the first sentence: Are we talking about the past? Yes. Am I happy that I dropped the pan on my foot? No. Can I change it now? No. Form: If + Past Perfect + would/wouldn't have + Past Participle Pronunciation: If I'd carried the bags and the pan, I would've carried the bags and the pan.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will read the second and third paragraphs. Instructions: "Please read the rest of the text. You have 2 minutes." When they finish reading, I will give the students paper strips with halves of if sentences related to the text. Instructions: "These are if sentences about what happened to Ms Booker. But this is only a half of a sentence. You will try to match the sentences with correct person. You have 2 minutes to finish." I will ask ICQs. When they finish they will sit with their new partners, and I will get WC feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will give the students flashcards with half is sentences on. They will work in pairs and complete the sentences. Instructions: "I will give each pair a bunch of cards. You will talk to your partner and complete the sentences on the cards." I will do the first example with a student. I will monitor and take notes for delayed feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will give the students scenarios where something has gone wrong. They have to work in pairs and blame each other for what happened. I will monitor and take notes for delayed feedback.
