Description

In this session the Ss are going to have a listening practice on music and a grammar practice considering the use of "used to". They start with a discussion about different types of music, a comparison between old and modern music, more vocabulary about musical devices and they later use these words in the listening practice. Then they learn about the meaning and form of "used to" and the past form of that .

Main Aims

  • to provide exposure and practice of a listening practice on music, do listening for gist and detailed

Subsidiary Aims

  • to provide vocabulary, use the words for speaking and fluency
  • to provide grammar about the meaning and form of "used to"

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To provide and preteach words about old and modern music

After presenting the topic, T makes groups of students. T puts two pictures on the board and wants Ss to compare the two pictures and write as many differences as possible. T asks Ss to give their answers and she writes the words elicited word on the board

Speaking (2-4 minutes) • To provide Ss with a speaking task and usage of the new words learned

T wants the Ss to sit in pairs. T gives Ss a handout of the book which is the speaking practice 3, on page 34, and asks the Ss to interview each other using the words they learned and write their partners answers on a paper.

Post-Speaking (1-2 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice what they have learned and a feedback for the teacher

T asks randomly from the Ss to talk about their partner's answers

Vocabulary (2-3 minutes) • To provide more words on music and music devices & prepare Ss for the listening

T puts the Ss into new groups and gives the instruction for the next practice, then gives the handouts to the Ss and wants the to do practice 1, vocabulary in groups in 1 or 2 minutes. Next T checks the answers and pronunciation.

vocabulary and pre-listening (3-4 minutes) • To provide more words on music and music devices & prepare Ss for the listening

T puts some pictures on the board and label them from a to h. T gives the instructions and wants the Ss to do practice 3, vocabulary on page 34. For the feedback T asks the answer individullay and checks pronunciation.

Listening for the gist (4-5 minutes) • To provide the Ss with less challenging gist listening

T draws a continuum on the board and asks the Ss to work in groups and order the already learned devices from the oldest to the newest. T does one example to clarify the task for Ss. Next T plays the listening once and SS listen to check their answers. T then lets the Ss to check their answers in 1 minute together.

Listening for details ( Detailed Listening) (5-6 minutes) • To provide the Ss with more challenging detailed listening

T gives the handout to the Ss and give them the instruction of the detailed listening practice which is a gap-filling practice. Ss listen and after that they have to check their answers in groups. T wants the Ss to read their answers for feedback.

Post-Listening and pre-grammar (3-4 minutes) • To check Ss's understanding of the text and prepare them for the grammar practice

T gives one minute to Ss to read the text and tell the class how was sound recording in the past. T writes some of the sentences on the board. T writes one sentence about her own habits or hobbies in the past and wants the Ss to give similar sentences. T tries to makes the Ss use the grammar by repeating and emphasizing.

Grammar (6-7 minutes) • To teach the form, meaning and usage of "used to"

T mentions some of the sentences on the board and asks CCQs to check form and meaning. Next T gives instructions for the grammar practices on page 35. Ss do the practices in group and then T asks them randomly to read their answers. After Ss provided T with the answers, T will work on the pronunciation and weak form of "to".

Post-Grammar (4-5 minutes) • To get feedback on grammar from the Ss

T gives another handout to the Ss which is the grammar practice on page 137. Ss do the practice in groups and then check their answers with T.
