Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the question "What is leadership?" and brainstorm together some of his ideas, pulling from the conversation last night.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Review the following vocabulary. Review meaning, form, and pronunciation as necessary. While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Listen to the introduction (0:00-6:50) as the speaker sets the context. Stop and pause as needed. Questions: - It was his first day at a new job doing what? - What position did he have before? - What happened? What is the context? - Why is he telling us this story?

While-Listening #2 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Listen to 6:50-9:07 and answer the following questions: - What did he learn about leadership in the Marine Corps? - What four qualities does he identify as being key to leadership? - What is leadership NOT about? Listen to 9:07-10:00 - Which leadership quote resonates the most with you? - Do you have any leadership quotes of your own that inspire you? Listen to 10:00-13:00 - What is his definition of leadership? - Do you agree? Disagree? - How does the speaker differentiate between leadership and talent? Are they the same thing? - Does the speaker think talent will lead to success? - What is the point of the statistics he shares? Listen to 13:00-end - What is the Leadership Lid Concept? - until 15:45 - What is the analogy he gives us? - What is the meaning of the two table lamps analogy? - What are some ways to raise your "leadership lid"?

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Discussion based on the following engagement questions: - What do you think of the speaker's approach to leadership? Do you agree or disagree? - How would you implement his ideas into your own position as a leader? - How can you add value to others?
