Description

In this lesson students will read a text about gaming, society, and the individual. Lesson will start with some pictures. Teacher will first show two pictures about games (Fortnight and Freefire). Students will then be asked to answer lead-in questions. Some potential blocking vocabulary will be taught in pre-reading stage of the lesson, and this is followed by a controlled task. Finally, there is a freer task for learners to discuss about the topic and there will be paragraph writing homework for the next lesson.

Main Aims

  • The intended aim of this lesson is to practise reading for the gist and detail within the context of "Gaming."

Subsidiary Aims

  • The sub-aim of this lesson is to provide clarification for gaming vocabulary in the context of "gaming."

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students for the theme of the lesson

The lesson starts with two pictures. The teacher shows ss the pictures of the games Fortnight and Free Fire and asks "What can you see?" After getting a brief feedback, teacher then asks "Do you know which game is that?" in order to trigger ss more into the topic. Then the T introduces the lead-in questions. Ss will work in groups and discuss the questions with their pairs, and they will have 3 minutes for this part. Instruction Check Questions: "Will you speak with your friends?" (Yes) "How much time do you have?" (3mins) After getting a brief feedback, learners will then be asked to predict the topic of the lesson. The teacher then introduces the topic: "Gaming, society, and the individual."

Pre-Reading Vocabulary (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by removing potential blocking vocabulary

The teacher first will elicit the words aggression, analytical, awareness, deficit, interaction, isolation, peer, and prolonged by showing pictures to the ss. While checking the pictures, concept check questions will be asked to the ss. The next slight will be showing the written forms of the aforementioned words, and the T asks students to listen and repeat. In this regard, the words will be drilled. After finishing the drill, there will be sentence completion task. Instruction check questions: "How much time do you have?" (3mins) When the time is up, there will be whole class feedback. Finally, students will be asked to discuss the questions from the task with their peers in breakout rooms. Instruction check questions: "Will you speak to your friends?" (Yes). Meanwhile, the T will monitor the breakout rooms and take notes of the ss speaking for the speaking feedback part, which will be held towards the ending of the lesson.

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide the gist

Ask ss to check the gist questions for a minute. After they check the questions, ask them to read the text quickly. ICQ: "Will you read it quickly?" (Yes). When the ss finish reading quickly, the T gets whole class feedback, and shows the answers.

While-Reading #2 (8-9 minutes) • Reading for specific information

Before checking the questions for the detailed task, the T will elaborate on adverbs on stance. The ss will then be asked to check the detailed questions for a minute. When the time is up, ss will asked to read the text again in a detailed way for six minutes. ICQ: Will you read it quickly? (No) How much time do you have? (6). They will then read the text again and answer the questions individually. After ss finish, ask them to check their answers in pairs. Then provide whole class feedback.

Post-Reading (8-9 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Before starting the freer task, the T briefly explains "exam tips slides." For the freer task, the SS will be asked to discuss the questions with their peers in the breakout rooms for 6 minutes. ICQ: Will you be discussing with your partners? (yes) How much time do you have (6). In meanwhile the T will monitor the rooms and take notes of the mistakes. This will be followed by a speaking whole class feedback. Lastly, the T will assign a homework for the next class (S number 25).
