Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of Words you need to know at a shop in the context of Shopping
  • To provide detailed and specific information listening practice using a text about Bazaar in the context of Shopping

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To grab the students attention to focus on the topic.

Teacher writes the word shopping on the white board and asks students to brainstorm as many words related to shopping as they can. Team with the highest number of words wins and gets to read their words out loud.

Vocabulary presentation (5-6 minutes) • To present the target vocabulary

Teacher says the meaning of target vocabulary and tries to elicit them. Teacher could also refer to the words brainstormed in the previous stage. Target Vocabulary: return, exchange, receipt, pay by credit card, pay with cash, try on, fit, shopping mall/center, cash register, refund, department store, dressing room, discount, sales, window shopping, bargain, line..

Vocabulary practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide practice and further clarification on the target vocabulary

T instructs sts to go to page 151 and complete exercise 1 &2. T displays the answer key on the board once the sts are done doing the exercise. Sts go back to 78 and complete ex1 as well. T & sts discuss any differences in answers.

Speaking practice (8-10 minutes) • To give students the room to practice speaking about their shopping habits

Preparation: T checks that sts know the meaning of some probably unfamiliar words in the questions. Later, T asks students to stand up and he pairs them randomly. If the students number is odd, T will instruct 3 students to work together. After sts are done, T gets feedback by asking some sts if they learned anything interesting about their partners.

Listening practice (7-8 minutes) • To practice gist listening and listening for details

T gives a short time to sts to read the main idea and details questions. Then T plays the video about shopping on the smart board for sts to watch. T might pause the video at certain parts and ask questions to make sure sts are following. After watching the video students answer the main idea and details questions. If need be, T plays the video again.

Speaking Practice 2 (3-5 minutes) • To get students to talk about reasons for going to a shopping center

T asks the question, "What are some reasons for going to a shopping center?" T writes some of the sts responses on the smart board. This stage is also a preparation for the following reading stage.

Listening practice 2 (optional) (6-7 minutes) • To practice gist listening and listening for details

T instructs sts to look at the photos of three people and asks about the reason why they go shopping. Sts guess then T plays the video for sts to get the answers. T checks answers with the whole class.T might pause the video to check comprehension.

Wrap up & Vocabulary recapping (optional) (3-6 minutes) • To recycle target vocabulary

T divides the class into three teams and uses the website baamboozle. Sts choose numbers and answer questions.
