Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, learners will have had the chance to understand and use vocabulary related to means of transportation in the context of a news report about traffic jam in London on a snowy day.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, learners will have had the chance to listen for specific detail in the context of a news report about traffic in London on a snowy day.
  • By the end of the lesson, learners will have had the chance to speak about their own experience related to traffic in Egypt.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Tell learners that Ilive in Nasr City and work in the 5th settlement and that you go to work by car. (drive to work) 2. My daughter studies engineering at Ain Shams University and has to take the bus then the underground (tube/subway) [Introduce all 3 names] 3. Give learners 2 minutes to talk about the means of transportation they use to go to work or university 4. Nominate some Ls to share with the class

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1. Ask LS to match phrases 1-7 to a-g 2. Answer the first one as an example 3. Give them 2 minutes to do the exercise 4. They check in pairs 5. Display model answer

Clarification (7-10 minutes) • To provide Ls with a meaning pronunciation and form of vocabulary that might be confusing

After eliciting from Ls the different means of transportation, show them some pictures accompanied by anecdotes to clarify the meaning 1. i. I once travelled to Ismailia and I wanted to cross the Suez Canal, how do you think I got to the other side? ii. Elicit iii. Show picture iv. Ask CCQs (Does it move on land or in water? Does it carry people only?) v. Drill vi. Show the name on screen (Ferry) 2. i. Last summer I travelled to the North Coast and I booked a ticket on Go Bus ii. Is it a regular bus? How is it different? (People ride it to go to far places / It doesn't stop as often/ It's usually bigger) iii. It's a 'coach bus' - Drill and write 3.i. Last October, I spent a day in Alexandria with my friends and I enjoyed an amazing ride on a special bus and I rode on the top to enjoy the amazing view of the sea. ii. Elicit iii. Drill Iv. Show name 4. i. What's the difference between these two? (motorbike/scooter) ii. Elicit iii. Drill and then show word 5. i.When it's very crowded and the cars are blocking the road, there's a _________ ii. Elicit iii. Check understanding (Are the streets crowded? iv. Drill v. Show the word.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. Set the scene by telling Ls that they will listen to a news report about London and fill in the table 2. Ask them to listen first and decide what it's exactly about 3. Play part of the audio and answer the first one 4. Give them time to answer 5. Ls check in pairs 6. Replay audio to confirm answers 7. Display answers

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1.Tell Ls about the time it rained heavily last month and what you did then. 2. Ask them to talk about that day and what happened to them. 3. Give LS 2 mins to prepare their ideas for the speaking activity 4. Give them 4 minutes to talk about their experiences in pairs 5. Ask them to share with the class 6. Provide feedback

Flexi-stage (5-7 minutes) • To provide extra practice in case LS finish early

1. Give Ls HO2 and ask them to do exercise 2 2. Answer the first one 3. Give them 2 mins to answer 4. They check in pairs 5. Provide answers
