Description

In this lesson, Ss will focus on receptive skills of reading and sub skills gist reading and reading for details and the class will have a productive skill of speaking. There are three stages for this reading lesson: pre- reading, while reading and post reading. The lesson starts with a lead in activity and the teacher introduces the topic to the Ss by asking some questions. This is followed by pre teaching necessary vocabulary from the reading text. Then, Ss do the reading and answer gist and detailed questions about the reading text. After that, Ss will do two post reading activities. The first activity is a vocabulary activity in which Ss will get to know the definitions of some new words in the reading text. The second activity is a speaking activity in which Ss will discuss in groups a question, provided by the teacher, related to the topic of the reading text.

Main Aims

  • To provide a gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about the need of a Ministry of Happiness in Egypt.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and usage of some vocabulary .
  • To provide fluency in a class discussion.

Procedure

pre - reading (Warmer/Lead-in) (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T plays the song "Because I am Happy" to get students' attention and introduce the topic to them. T asks Ss: * Are you happy? * What makes you happy? * What do you do if you are in a bad mood and you want to be happy? T shows Ss a picture of the Minister of Happiness in UAE and asks Ss if they know her. T asks Ss : Do you think Egypt needs a Ministry of Happiness? Why or why not?

Pre-Reading ( Teaching Blockers) (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and to prevent difficult words from blocking students' understanding of the text.

T elicits from Ss the meaning of the two words: welfare ans superficial through putting the two words in sentences.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T gives the students the reading text. Ss read for gist; read the text for just 2-3 mins to get the main idea of the text. Ss answer the following question: What is the main idea of the text? Ss check answers together, then whole class feedback. Peer correction, in case Ss make errors.

While-Reading (Reading for details) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss read the text again to answer the following questions: * What is the rank of Egypt in the 2019 World Happiness Report? * What are the factors measured by the World Happiness Report (name at least 3 factors). * What are the aims of UAE's Ministry of Happiness? * What is Al Mirazi's (a person whose opinion is involved in the text) opinion of establishing a Ministry of Happiness in Egypt? Ss check answers together and then whole class feedback. Peer correction, in case Ss make errors.

Post-Reading (Vocabulary) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T divides Ss into pairs. Each pair will have a note that has a word from the text. Each pair should search for the word in the text and guess the meaning of the word. The words used are scale, convinced, engagement, convinced, enterprise and transparency. Ss check answers together and then whole class feedback.

Post-Reading (Speaking) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

* T divides Ss into groups. * Ss discuss the following question with their groups: If you are Egypt's Minister of Happiness, what will be your first decisions to make Egyptians happy? * Ss present their answers to the class. * T notes any errors related to the tense or pronunciation. * T writes the errors on the board. * T asks Ss to find the mistakes and correct them. * T gives Ss a lesson summary
