Description

In this lesson,ss learn about the Past Perfect Tense through guided discovery in the context of solving riddles. The lesson starts with solving a riddle to find good reasons why some items had been put there. Then, Ss listen to people trying to solve the riddle. T elicits the marker sentence from the listening task, highlights the meaning, form and pronunciation. Finally, there's some controlled practice where ss match sentences using the past perfect. This is followed by a freer practice via solving a puzzle.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a past perfect tense in the context of solving riddles

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-I ask ss" Do you like riddles?" _I may have to introduce the meaning of "riddles". -On PPT, I introduce a picture of some items which hadn't been put by anyone and I ask Ss to work in pairs trying to find out the reason why these items had been put there.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-I tell ss that they are going to listen to people trying to solve the riddle and they have to decide if the solution they had found was the same.

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-I ask ss to listen again and ask them what the solution of the riddle. -I elicit the marker sentence: When the sun had come out, the snowman melted. _CCQs: How many tenses are there in this sentence? Two Are they the same? No -I give Ss HO1 -Ss check in pairs first, then from the ppt

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-I write the marker sentence and draw a timeline on the board. -I elicit the sequence of the two actions from Ss and apply them on the timeline. -I elicit the form. -Drilling.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-I give Ss hand-outs and ask them to match the sentences using the past perfect.

Freer Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss work in pairs: Ss A look at the puzzle A and the solution to puzzle B. Ss B looks at puzzle B and the solution to puzzle A. They ask and answer questions to find the solution to his/ her puzzle. The quickest is the winner.

Feedback • To make sure Ss are using the TL correctly and to correct Ss' mistakes.

I monitor and take notes for some correct and incorrect sentences. I write the sentences on the board. Praise those who said the correct sentences. As Ss to correct the wrong ones.

Flexi Stage • To allow Ss to use the TL in case we've finished early.

I give SS HO2, they play a game:" Why did you say that?" using the past perfect tense.
