Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about strange towns.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a role play in the context of talking about strange towns.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts by telling a story: "I live in a house in New Cairo. There are 2 supermarkets and 2 pharmacies in the area. There are also different cafes and restaurants" what about you? Tell your partner about the area you live in. -T gives the students 5 mins to talk together then asks them about each other.

Pre-Reading/ Pre-teaching vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher divides the students into 2-3 groups (depending on the number) and gives them words and definitions to match. Words: Modern/apartment/windmill/bridge T: *pointing* words, definitions, match. -T monitors while students are working. -T then tells students to move around the classroom and they will find the answer key. (The words and the definitions are hung on the wall in the classroom). -T then provides MFP of the new vocabulary.

While-Reading #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher provides instructions: Read and answer this question: HO2 (ex.1A) ICQ: Are you reading quickly or slowly? (quickly) Students then check their answers in pairs. -T asks one of the students for the answer. The correct answer is China.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Instructions: Read again and answer these questions. ICQ: Are you going to read quickly or carefully? (carefully) -T then gives them HO3 (ex. 1C) -T monitors. -Students check their answers in pairs. Then Teacher gives the answer key

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T at this point changes the pairs. Instructions: Take notes of your answers to these questions (HO4), then discuss in pairs. -T monitors while students are talking. -T takes notes to give feedback about the accuracy and fluency. -While students are talking to each other, the teacher writes the correct and incorrect examples on the board.
