Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, Ss will have practiced reading for gist and specific information using a text about world markets in the context of food.

  • By the end of this lesson, Ss will have practiced speaking for fluency in a conversation in the context of food.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show a picture of a well known Egyptian movie and ask students: 1- Have you seen this movie? Do you remember its name? 2- What did Ahmed H. like in the movie? I will choose a strong S to ask me the questions on the projector and demo questions and answers with the whole class " Lamia, ask me the first question." " Abdel Rahim, Ask Amira". Now, do it in pairs.

Pre-teaching (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible.

I will show the picture of a market and elicit the word from Ss. I will ask Ss "What about Awlad ragab, is it a market?" I will ask Ss "can you give examples of Egyptian markets." Drill the word and then write it and highlight the form on the board. I will show a picture of an international brand in contrast with a local brand and elicit the word local. Ask Ss "can you give me examples of local shops/brands?" Drill the word and then write it and highlight the form on the board. Show a picture of a shop assistant and a customer and elicit the word customer. Drill the word and then write it and highlight the form on the board. Show a picture of some Egyptian snacks. Ask Ss "What are these?" "Can you eat them for lunch?" Drill the word and then write it and highlight the form on the board. Show a picture of a snake to highlight the difference in pronunciation between snack and snake.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task.

Chest the reading task and say: "I want to help me here. There is no title in this passage and I need you to help me put a title. read the passage quickly and find a title for it." ICQ: "Are you going to read every word? No", " What will you put here? A title" Give Ss 90 seconds to read the passage. O/C feedback.

While-Reading #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading for specifics task.

Tell Ss to read again and find the answers of the questions provided. Tell Ss to check their answers in pairs. Show the answers on the projector.

Post-Reading (speaking) (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Demo the speaking task with Ss. "Lamia, ask me the first question." "Abdel Rahim, ask Amira." Tell Ss to do the same in pairs.
