Description

In this lesson, students learn about Present Simple Tense through the items in the classroom.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The instructor takes a book and says " I read " and then give it to one of the students and says " I give, you read." The instructor says "You take the book." and then she/he takes the book and says "I take the book." After that, he/she opens the book and says "I open the book." and look the students to do the same thing. When they open the book he/she says "You open the book." Then repeat it with the expression of " shut the book." Lastly, he/she wants to try this with their partner beside them. They repeat all the steps with the book as below: I/You read. I/You take the book. I/You open the book. I/You shut the book.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The instructor takes attention to the items in the classroom by using Simple Present Tense. He/she says " The blackboard is black." and wait for the repetition from the students. Then it continues with the other things. (The chalk is white. The desk is brown. etc.) Then he/she tries the opposite version: a) Is the blackboard black or white? b) The blackboard is not white. c) It is black. The instructor gives a worksheet (attached material-1) out which includes the grammar charts and gives the students 2 minutes to made aware of the grammatical structure. Then she/he applies the sentences below with TPR approach and takes the response from the students: a) I open the book, take the chalk, shut the desk. b) The book is not white or black. c) Is it brown? Yes.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The instructor points one of the students and says "Ali reads the book, he takes the chalk and shuts the desk." Then she/he writes this on the board and take the attention on -s with a different color. The instructor shows the rule by conjugating the verb with all the persons.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The instructor continues to conjugate. He/she starts with "go" and then "do". After that he/she shows them how to make a question wit Present Simple Tense. The instructor wants them to try to make questions and opposite sentences with the sentences they said before. a) Do you read? b) You do not take the chalk. c) Does not she shut the desk?

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The instructor gives the handout to the students and explains the exercise. They complete together Section A on page 2. Then the instructor separates them into small groups to complete the rest of the exercise together.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The instructor gives a new exercise out and requests to complete it independently. He/she checks the students' answers while they were practicing and helps them if it is necessary.
