Description

This is a lesson plan for English File book, by C. Latham-Koeing, Elementary. The session starts with Vocabulary regarding kinds of music and famous singers. Different kinds of music are introduced by sample tracks and they will have to match them with names of each kind, and then ss will match famous singers with their home countries. A grammar lesson later follows regarding revision of be or do, which ss have studied before but here they will be reminded of how to use them and when to use each.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will play a light traditional Iranian music as ss walk in they will start their class with it and they will be exposed to a new kind of music. What do you think we will talk about today? Music What kinds of music do you know? Elicit answers

Pre- task (12-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Hand out the papers and explain that we will listen to 9 kinds of music. Just listen and number the kinds of music 1-9. If they do not know some of them it is OK. They can listen to the track twice. 1 Blues 2 Classical 3 Heavy metal 4 Hip hop 5 Jazz 6 Latin 7 R&B 8 Reggae 9 Rock Then ss in pairs will ask and answer about what kind of music they like. Model the first exercise. Ask one s "What kind of music do you like?" then, "What kind of music don`t you like?" CCQs: Are we going to talk about foods we like? No What are we going to talk about? Music we like In groups? No, pairs Then ask for FB. Put ss in pairs, now they will move to next exercise which is about famous people and what kind of music they are famous for. ICQs: Are you going to talk or write down? Talk What to do if you do not know some of them? Task- Grammar (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Elicit the problem in this sentence: She is her homework. Answer: She does her homework. Show them the exercise on the hand out and tell them they have 3 minutes to circle the right word (choose between do and be). Tell them this is an individual exercise. ICQs: Are you going to write down the correct form? No, just circle the write one. How much time? 3 min Alone or together? Alone Then they will compare answers in pairs for 1 minute, the T gives FB. Then, ss will see three boxes on the HOs with examples of different usage with different forms of do/does and to be, as main verbs and auxiliary verbs. They need to match each description with the examples in the boxes in front. this is a PW. give them 4 minutes to match and then give FB.

Freer practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

ss will work individually. Ask them to put each phrase in the column Are you ...? or Do you ...? Then give FB. ICQs: Are we going to make sentences with these? No What are we going to do then? Put them in columns. ss ask and answers Qs in pairs,regarding likes and dislikes and basic info about themselves using correct forms of do/does and to be. Tell them they can give additional info. Model one Q & A and ask them to copy the module. Try to include negative and Q forms as well. ICQs: Are we going to talk to each other or write sth?
