In this lesson, students learn about the common uses of have e.g (have=take) (have=possess) in the context of all about you.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of common uses of have in the context of all about you.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of speaking in the same context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and generate interest in the topic.

Welcome students. Ask them how they feel and respond genuinely. Tell the students that they need to listen to a story and find out "What is the common word in the story?" Listen to their answers. Give feedback.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Chest HO 1. Tell the learners that they need to fill in the gaps with an appropriate word. Demonstrate with the students the first sentence. Monitor carefully. Let SS check their answers in pairs. Let the learners listen to check their answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask SS to underline verb phrases that begin with "have." Let the students to check their answers in pairs. Listen to their answers. Ask the students CCQs and try to elicit the meaning of each phrase

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show SS a diagram that shows some common uses of have.Ask Ls some questions about form through marker sentences e.g. "have a shower" and "have got a cold." "What comes after have and have got?" Highlight that after have is a noun. Show the form of have and have got. . Drill the correct pronunciation and focus on stress patterns while drilling.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Divide Ls into group (A) and group (B). Tell the learners that they need to stick each noun or phrase to the correct section of the diagram. Ask SS if they do not know the meaning of every word. Demonstrate with them . Monitor carefully and check that Ls have improved in their knowledge of the TL. Provide help whenever necessary. Give open class feedback and praise good use of TL and correct any errors sensitively. Chest HO. Tell SS that they need to match each sentence to the correct section. Monitor carefully. Give feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Chest HO. Ask the learners to discuss the questions in pairs. Monitor. Give an open discussion and correct any mistakes sensitively. Ask learners to take a minute to think of their life and write 5 or more sentences using the different meanings of have. Instruct learners to move around the class talking to other students about their activities. Instruct them to speak in full correct sentences. Ask them to write the name of the Ss that they have something in common with. Monitor for good uses of language and inaccurate ones. Give content and language feedback.

Extra Activities (4-5 minutes) • To provide extra practice of TL.

Attract Ls attention to the pictures around the class. Explain that these are some activities and they need to say what is the activity and to which section it refers.
