Description

In this lesson students learn some new vocabulary related to age and stages of life , and some adjectives relate to each stage. At the beginning students will match some pictures with some description of each life stage. They will make sentences about people they know e.g in their families and discuss their life stages. They will have a discussion about which words are typical characteristic of the different age group and give reasons. Students will have some freer time speaking and answering some questions about the advantages and the disadvantages of each stage and what do they like and dislike about their own life stage.

  • To provide practice of Stages of life words in the context of life stages

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversations and discussions in the context of Age and stages of life

Procedure

Stage 1; warmer- lead in (5-7 minutes) • To active the students schemata

I will tell a story about my son and I will tell them his age and ask them if they have any children and about their ages, then I will stick the pictures of people from different ages on the WB, I will elicit from the ss how old you think each person is ? in terms of age range. write the ranges on the WB as the SS say them then elicit from the students words to describe the age groups.

stage 2 (10-12 minutes) • Introduce vocabulary to describe life stages in context.

Put students in groups of threes, Give the students the strips sentences handout ask them to discuss in their groups which sentence describes each picture, ICC, then ask each group to stick the sentences next to the appropriate pictures. Check the answers on the WB and deal with any wrong answers, check the students understanding for the difference between adolescent and a teenager,elderly and pensioner, what toddler and thirty something mean .Drill the words with more difficult pronunciation.CCQ. Give the students page 70 handout.

stage 3 (7-10 minutes) • Controlled practice of vocabulary

Get the students to make sentences using the words in exercise 1 about people they know, example in their families EX2. Monitor and help if needed. Get the students to work in pairs and tell each other about the people they made sentences about. Take some general FB from some SS about who they talked about.

Stage 4. (7-10 minutes) • Introduce age related activities

Ask the students what characteristics are typical of the different age groups elicit few ideas . Introduce the new vocabulary through definitions elicit, check, drill. (Wise : showing experience or knowledge, rebellious : uncontrollable....) Stick the new adjectives flash cards on the side of the board ask the students if they know them encourage them to explain for the others who do not know, explain the adjectives that they don't. ask the students to work in small groups and discuss which adjective goes with each group of age. Elicit for FB and correct the wrong answers, then stick the flash cards next to the appropriate pictures.

Stage 5 (5-7 minutes) • Freer speaking and personalisation

Write Toddler on the board ask the students what are the advantages and disadvantages of being a toddler, elicit. Give the students a HO about their life stage, with the following questions: What stage are you in at the moment? what do you like dislike about it? what stage have you most enjoyed so far? and why? let them mingle in the class and ask each other. FB what they learned about each other.

Stage 6 • Delay feed back (if time)

Put the students into two groups , play a matching game with the flash cards and the picture
