In this lesson students will listen to two business people in pre-task stage and understand the problem that the speakers have and they will read the transcript of the speakers to check the expressions that are for agreeing, disagreeing and giving opinion. In the task phase, they will try to reach an agreement in their group to find the best candidate for the assistant position.

Main Aims

  • To perform a task using previous knowledge and peer help and to be able to give his/her opnion on something
  • To provide practice of language used for giving opinion, agreeing and disagreeing in the context of business

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of personality adjectives


Warm Up and Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • Engage students

Teacher asks some questions about work life and possible problems that can be seen in workplace to raise the awareness of difficulty in finding a new person to work with. Students will listen to the conversation and elicit the problem that the speakers have(they need a new assistant).

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Students check the transcript with their pairs and find phrases that include agreeing, disagreeing, and giving opinion. These will help them on task.

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will be divided into groups of five. Their task will be choosing the most suitable candidate for the staff that they have listened in the pre-task stage. They will be given three possible candidates' information cards.

Planning (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Students are supposed to use agreeing, disagreeing, and giving opinion phrases to reach an agreement on the candidate that would be the most suitable for the company. They will need to support their decision.

Report (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Students will report their decision. They will give some reasons why they choose that candidate. Other groups will do the same and whole class will agree on one candidate in the end.

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Students will be given a hand out that include some more phrases on agreeing, disagreeing, and giving opinion. They will categorise the phrases and if necessary they will check the previous phrases they have seen in the script.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Students will be given a hand out that provide some practice on the phrases on agreeing, disagreeing, and giving opinion.
