In this lesson students practise skimming and scanning for general and specific information. They will also learn some new vocabulary .


Main Aims

  • Help students to practise skimming and scanning reading.
  • Practise speaking skill.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Learn some new vocabulary. Know information about ice road truckers.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I ask ss about the jobs they know. I show them pictures of some jobs. I ask them if they have any information about ( Ice road truckers ). I can show them a short video about this job.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I introduce blocking vocabulary using MPF technique . 1- trucker: the person who drives a big van. noun I say the pronunciation and they repeat. then I use CCQs to check their understanding: 1- Does he drive a taxi? 2- Does he drive a truck ? 3- Do you want to be a trucker ? 2- freeze: becomes like ice verb I say the pronunciation and they repeat. CCQs 1- Is it cold ? 2- Is it liquid ? then I ask ss to use blocking vocab in sentences. Finally, I give them the task .

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS practice skimming the text to get a general idea. they answer these questions: 1- what is the name of the driver? 2- Is this job dangerous or safe ? 3- how long is the journey?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students practise scanning to look for details . SS are asked to answer these questions: 1-Why do ice truckers have a lot of accidents ? 2- Why does Lisa have a long holiday ? 3- Who is Kyle Gulkoski?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I ask ss to speak to each other in pairs about the text. then I choose some students to speak to the class. I ask Ss to write a summary of the text . Finally I ask ss to imagine that they are ( Ice road truckers ) what will they do ?
