Description

In this lesson, the students learn and practice the use of the question words (how-what) out of reading a text concerning the identity theft. The lesson starts with a conversational group-work activity where students discuss some questions related to the main theme. This is followed up by an intensive reading to work out a gap-filling task that reveals the grammar part. The lesson ends up with a speaking activity where the students try to find out about each other over a paper-shuffling game.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the question forms (how-what) in the context of a statistical study

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide intensive reading practice using a text about Identity theft

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will show the image of an identity card and ask students about its importance and value.

Highlighting (5-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher will write questions regarding the theme on the board to be discussed in groups of three before he takes the whol class feedback.

Exposure (6-9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The students will read a text for specific informations and to do a gap-filling task. The teacher will check their answers and give feedback

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher will provide a clear explanation of the meaning,purpose of using the phrases "how+adjective"and"what (kind of/type/sort of)+ verb" to make questions.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher will ask the students to give example to check the concept and asks them to work out tasks for more practice, then he gives feedback.

Speaking activity (6-7 minutes) • To cloture the lesson with a speaking-based activity related to the main topic.

The teacher will ask the student to write anonymous descriptions of themselves including personal details. The teacher shuffle the papers and asks the students to find out about the concerned student.
