Materials

Main Aims

  • Practicing skimming and scanning in reading. Reading in details about metros around the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in discussion Introducing the students some new vocabulary and having them practice these vocabulary through some pictures including " definitions and examples."

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in amap (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I use the brainstorming technique to generate ideas. I write the question on the white board (which cities do you know that have metros?) . I ask students to work in pairs .

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

At first I divide the students into 3 groups. I use a video relating to the topic of the reading (15 THE OLDEST METRO in the world!!). I play the video for 4 minutes and then I ask each group to discuss about what they saw. After watching the video,I prepare some simple discussion question. For example; !- How many metro stations are in the video? (15) 2- Which one is the first ? (London metro) 3- Have you ever travelled by the metro?yes/no

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will continue working in groups of 3, and I will give each group some handout slips and pictures . Each slip has information about Dubai Metro, London Metro and Moscow Metro .I will give them 2 minutes to match the picture with the city. I Monitor and help them when they need..

While-Reading/Listening #2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

This time I will ask the students to read the text in details and individually. I will ask them to answer the questions in exercise C in their Student's Book p.72 In pairs.

While-Reading #2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading task

After students have understood the overall idea of the text I elicit the new vocabulary in the reading text. For example, 1- Deep means having a large distance from the top or surface to the bottom. 2- Air conditioning means a system that cools and dries the air in a building or a vehicle. 3- Statue means a figure of a person or an animal in stone, metal or bronze

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

For this part of the lesson, I would like the students to focus on how this text relates to their own experience. They will talk in pairs asking and answering about their own experience in travelling by the metro. at the end of this part I will write 4 sentences on the board for the students to decide if they are true or false. 1- The Moscow Metro has statues and lamps.True 2- The Dubai Metro is very crowded. False ( The Moscow Metro) 3-The Dubai Metro has no drivers.True 4- The London Underground opened in 1863. True
