Main Aims

  • The learner will be able to reschedule a doctor's appointment.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of language and lexis used for making requests (I'd like to.../Could you..?, etc.)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Discuss how you might plan a trip for a common medical procedure abroad. Elicit and list language and lexis necessary to make/reschedule an appointment. Concept check using CCQs, and check pronunciation as appropriate.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Further elicit and list necessary language to complete the task. Present the following (audio) model: “Hello. This is the Guest Relations at the International Medical Clinic with a message for Maria Alvares. We need to reschedule your appointment to an earlier time. Could you come in on October 9th at 10 am? Please call us back to let us know if this new appointment time will work for you. Thank you and have a good day.”

Planning (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan task

An opportunity for students to formulate the information they would respond with, and how to convey it. Students may refer to the model and the language elicited earlier in the lesson to produce a response.

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students in pairs role-play a patient rescheduling their appointment. This is in a form of an information gap, with differing information distributed amongst the pairs. Teacher models with a student, and checks for listening comprehension with CCQs, and checks for instructions with ICQs.

Report & Language Analysis (12-16 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Students report on difficulties encountered, language and lexis that needs to be further reviewed, and with the feedback of the teacher, envisions how they might improve their response.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with further practice of the task language

In new pairs, and with redistributed information, students practice rescheduling the appointment using the feedback from the last stage to further improve their skills. To wrap up the session, plenary feedback, and set homework/work to be completed before the next session.
