Description

In this lesson Ss will be introduced to the functional language of asking for and giving clarifications through situational presentation based on a Gap-fill activity.Ss learn about 'Asking for and Giving Clarification' The lesson starts with a discussion about the misunderstanding. This is followed by clarification where Ss understand the meaning/form/pronunciation of asking for& giving clarification dialogues. Later, there will be some controlled practice through completing sentence exercise and free practice via a final role-play speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for asking for and giving clarification in the context of political issues related to work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion and role play

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T presents some photos and cartoons on the WB, then asks students to think about them and discuss with their partners what the situation could be. T elicits " asking for clarification" "explaining what you mean"

Building Context (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-T will give HOs 1 and give the instructions "Look at the sentences in bold and divide them into two groups" " asking for clarification" or "explaining what you mean" "check your answer with your friends after you finish" -Ss wıll categorıze the phrases and check with their partners. -T will give feedback on WB T will give HOs 2 and give the instructions "Complete the dialogues with the expressions from part A and complete the dialogue with the words from the box" check your answer with your friends after you finish" -T will give answer key.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T presents the chart that phrases are categorized and ask " Why do we use these in part a?" elicits the answers "for clarifying" "asking for clarification" (meaning) T drills the phrases with Ss (pronunciation) T elicits the form by asking questions (form)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T divides the class into the groups and give HOs for role-play activity. According to their situation, they will write a short dialogue and act out it by using the phrases. T monitors and gives WC feedback

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T divides the class into the groups and give instructions. "There are three situation stations." "Imagine that you're in that situation." "When I make noise change your station and partner also" T ask ICQs After Ss do their role-plays, T gives feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives a situation but now they do whole class role-play. T monitors and gives feedback.
