Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about good and bad news in the context of work conversations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of conversational replies in the context of general conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Since I am going first today, I'll begin with a short warmer, and engage some of the students in a chat about their weekends. This will be a speaking for fluency, so I won't error correct at this stage. Following this I'll give the students 5 pictures relating to the listening. sts work in pairs and discuss the pictures. What do you think they are about? followed by WC share

PreListening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I'll work on eliciting some of the words from the pictures and check, drill, write the word and mark the stress of the lexis on the board. Any words that I can't elicit I'll introduce the context. then also CDWS. Then I'll give the sts a worksheet using the words we've just learned. followed by GW check and WC check

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

sts listen to the audio and match the conversations with the picture. WC check

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

sts work in pairs match the sentences with replies from the text. then listen to the audio a second time and check their answers. compare answers in small groups then provide sts with an answer sheet to check.

Post-Listening (8-13 minutes) • to personalize the listening text

students work in pairs and talk about if they or someone they know has experienced any of these things followed by WC share and feedback
