Description

In this lesson, students learn about demonstrative adjectives through guided discovery based on clothes vocabulary. The lesson starts with a description of students' clothes. This is followed by the explanation of the use of demonstrative adjectives. Finally there is some controlled practice through written and oral activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (15-20 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows the flashbacks about clothing to the students, they repeat the pronunciation after listening to the audio. Then, in pairs, they describe each other's clothes using the new vocabulary.

Exposure (15-20 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher starts using the demonstrative adjectives to point at different stuff and clothing within the classroom. Then helped by the students, the teacher explains students about the use for the correct use of the demonstrative adjectives. Guided by the teacher, students practice orally the demonstrative adjectives.

Clarification (15-20 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher makes emphasis on the pronunciation of the vocabulary (singular and plural form), students listen and repeat. Then, to confirm understanding, the teacher dictates students phrases using demonstrative adjectives and clothes vacabulary. This is followed by the teacher writing the answers on the board and students grading each other.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students answer the activity on pages 44 and 45, by writing "this", "that", "these" and "those" and the name of the clothes. Students are graded individually. Then the whole class answers why those are the correct answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The teacher writes phrases on the board for students to complete using the correct demonstrative adjective according to the context they are given. Students are graded individually.

Free Practice (25-30 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students work in pairs and answer the activity 2 by choosing the correct demonstrative adjective. Then they model a conversation by personalizing the one on page 45, after the teacher has checked the writing and grammar, they role play it in front of the whole class.
