Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about "That was then this is now"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Work in pairs and give me ideas the question: "What does friendship mean to you?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. The title "That was then this is now". How would you comment it? Can you predict the idea of the text? 2. Look at the photos. Who can you see in them? What are they doing? What are their relationships? Why? Discuss your ideas in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. I give you 3 minutes to read the text. Name me 2 main characters. Check your predictions choosing the right answer: -Will and Tina were best friends and now they are married; -Tina and Will became close friends while they were studying at the university and now they don't communicate; -When Tina and Will were students, they shared a house but now they live in different towns and seldom meet each other. Check your answers in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. Read the text again for 5 minutes. Then you should do some tasks according to the text. 2. Order the parts of the text and check your results in group. - Tina and Will became close friends; - When they have weekends, they spend time together and they have a lot of laugh; - They shared a house together for nearly 3 years; - Tina and Will live in the different towns and everyone works and their lifestyles are different; - Will thinks that Tina is untidy; - Tina works as a production assisitant and has low salary. 3. Read the sentences and decide who it it about and write T or W: 1) This person lives in London; 2) This character doesn't like to tidy up; 3) This person enjoys spending money on clithes, good restaurants; 4) This person helps young people to get involved in the arts. The answers you can compare with each othet and then I'll show you the right ones. 4. Decide if the statemnt true/false: a. It was difficult to become friends because they often argued; b. Will earns a good salary and he likes this job; c. After graduation Tina lives with her parents; d. Tina and Will always had really good discussions in different aspects like literature, environment etc, when they were students. While you will be doing these tasks, you can use text.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. Answer the questions: - What can you tell about Tina's and Will's personalities? - How do you think coould they become good family? Why? 2. Discuss in pairs the questions: -What is more important: good salary and job's dissatisfactory or low salary and desire to work? - Which lifestyle would you choose personally: Tina or Will's?
