Description

This lesson is about making online friends, which have become an increasingly popular phenomenon in recent times. The lesson aims to develop reading skills and provides practice of sub- skills of speaking and writing skills. Ss will discuss about making online friends. They will work in pairs and in groups to complete the tasks. In post reading, Ss will do some practices on connecting words which can be helpful for writing skill.

Main Aims

  • To develop Ss' reading skill providing gist and scanning tasks in the context of making online friends

Subsidiary Aims

  • to learn and practice vocabulary related to context; to enable them to talk and practice speaking skills in the context of making online friends

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greeting (introducing myself) Twill show some pictures related to the topic and ask Ss to guess today's topic. Then, Ss will do brainstorming on the topic of making online friends. One or two examples will be modelled by T and Ss will continue.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss will work in pairs and ask about each other's online friends (if they do not have online friends, it would be fine to ask about their close friends) Then, Ss will be given a handout including matching task. They will need to match the definitions with the words.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss will given a gist reading task about Valentina Sandri. First, they will read the text by themselves. Then, they will complete the information working in groups. T will show some examples of the connecting words; and, but, because to get Ss more engaged in the tasks below. Ss will be given a task in order to clarify whether they can use those connecting words or not.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss will do a similar task to the previous one; they will compete the sentences using connecting words while reading the task for the gist (pair work) Then, they will be asked to fill in column B in pre-reading task. (group work) Then, Ss will have an interview each other to fill in the column C (pair work)

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will be asked to write their learner profile for the website. They will use the information given before. Texts will be checked in pair groups and some answers will be elicited.
