Description

In this lesson students practice speaking fluency on the topic of ghostwriting. This is a skills-integrated lesson which focuses on speaking for fluency and listening for gist as well as listening for details and one lays the groundwork for the other. The lesson starts with a short speaking activity to guess the word 'ghostwriter' and continues with another speaking activity, a controlled role play activity and two listening activities. The lesson ends with a free speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a role play and discussions as well as provide gist, specific information and detailed listening in the context of ghostwriting

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using short texts about book reviews
  • To provide clarification of publishing lexis in the context of an interview with a ghostwriter

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To arouse interest in the topic,to prepare Ss for the activities / to pre-teach some vocabulary

'What is it? There is a word for this. Work in pairs to invent the word. 1 minute.' Ss check with another pair. Audio FB play the first 5 sec. of the audio and elicit the word. T / w/c FB

Initial Listening task (2-4 minutes) • to listen for gist (easy task)

Give Ss some time to read the sentences. Pre-teach 'pen name' - refer to LA sheet. Ask Ss: 'What do you think ghostwriter means?' Ask one or two individuals. play the audio file. Replay if necessary. Ss peer-check with the person to their right - then left w/c FB - show three with your fingers.

fluency speaking practice (4-6 minutes) • to provide ss with opportunity to respond to what they have listened to and read in free discussion practice

Say: 'This is Andrew Crofts and these are his 'ghosted' books. Read them quickly. One minute.' Say: In groups of three, discuss which one is the most interesting and why? You have 3 minutes' T monitors. w/c FB: ask two Ss to give their opinions.

Semi-controlled Speaking practice (4-8 minutes) • to provide Ss with practice asking questions in the past in the context of an interview / to prepare Ss for the listening by pre-teaching some of the vocabulary they need

'Stand in two rows in the front of the classroom, face-to-face. You are the interviewer and you are Andrew Crofts, the ghostwriter. You ask these questions. You answer their question with the information on the card. When I clap, you swap your cards and start again.' Give Ss to read their cards. Model one or two questions if necessary. T monitors. Give help with sentences/vocabulary as necessary. FB how do you think Andrew become a ghostwriter? Elicit one or two ideas. Pre-teach some of the words in the listening by eliciting and/or reformulating what Ss say. and record on the board.

Listening for details (3-5 minutes) • to provide Ss with practice in listening for details

Ask Ss to read the two sentences. Encourage guesswork and elicit some answers. Play the listening. Ss Peer-check w/c FB

Language Focus - Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • to pre-teach the vocabulary Ss will encounter during the listening

Ask Ss to use their mini-dictionaries to look up the meaning of the words. Ss peer-check w/c FB Clarify MFP on the w/b by eliciting from Ss- refer to LA sheet.

Listening for specific information (3-5 minutes) • to provide Ss with practice in listening for detailed information

Ask : read the sentences. Then listen to the rest of the interview. Andrew enjoys being a ghostwriter. Why? Check the reasons he mentions.' Ss listen. Ss peer-check w/c FB by nominating Ss

Jigsaw Free Speaking Practice (10-12 minutes) • to provide Ss with free fluency practice

Divide the class into three groups Gr A: Discuss Q1 and write their answers on w/b Gr B: Q2 - discuss advantages of being a ghostwriter and record on w/b Gr C: Q2 - discuss disadvantages of being a ghostwriter and record on w/b T monitors and gives help as necessary. OPTION: groups swap their topics and agree or disagree with the ideas on the w/b w/c FB each group summarises the points they made - others (1 S) agree or disagree. OPTION: if time, language FB on common errors.
