Vocabulary - "Travelling"
Elementary, A2 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn the vocabulary associated with traveling abroad (especially with flying). They will learn words for modes of transport (such as bus, train, aeroplane etc.), as well as words/phrases used in airports. They will practice their speaking, listening and reading during this lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of transport words in the context of travel
  • To provide gist and deduction reading practice using a text about travel

  • To provide fluency in the context of transport and air travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Introduce myself 2. Ask students where the photo is from 3. Where is Hong Kong? CHECK 4. CCQ (How do i get around Istanbul?) Ask students to name types of transport (mindmap - eliciting) 5. Outline topic "travelling"

Contextualising and practicing speaking (8-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the vocab. and make it accessible

EXERCISE 1 (3 mins) 1. Elicit "transport" and "easy" from students GIVE HANDOUT 2. Students work in pairs to answer the questions (ICQ) 3. Check as a class, write on board EXERCISE 2a (4 mins) 1. Get students attention (stand in middle) 2. Write up questions and write possible answers (I often travel by plane, I do not often travel by plane; I like traveling by plane, I do not like traveling by plane; I like spending time at airports, I don't like spending time at airports) 3. Students work in pairs and discuss (1-2 min) 4. Check 1 or 2 answers

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

1. Ask students to read through the different sentences (only read ICQ) - QUICK 1 min 2. Give students my handouts and ask them to match the words to the pictures in pairs (3-4 mins) ICQ 3. Check as a class EXERCISE 2b 4. 2 mins to work by themselves and order the sentences 5. Check in pairs for 1 min (reshuffle people) EXERCISE 2c 6. Listen and check answers 7. Check as a class

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

EXERCISE 3 1. Check 'foreign destination' 2. Students work in pairs to discuss questions (3-4 mins) 3. Meanwhile, write questions on board 4. Get students to report back (2 mins)

Post-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the vocab and expand on what they've learned
