Grammar (Present Simple, 3rd Person Singular), Reading and Vocabulary (Phrases for Time/ Frequency)
Elementary level

Description

In this sequence of lessons Ss will learn and practise the 3rd person singular features of present simple tense by means of looking back to an audio recording about a celebrity. At first, they will have time to check the audio script and look at a couple of sentences (positive and negative) extracted from it and written on the board.Their notion of whether the sentences are positive or negative will be tested and then they will be asked to scan the script for more examples. Next, they will be asked to say what they can remember about the celebrity through elicitation, which provides them with what they need for the first stage of practice. The feedback for the exercise will be given with extra attention to and emphasis on the grammar points. There will also be a pronunciation part on syllable numbers for 3rd person singular verbs which will be presented and practised via choral and individual drills. With the pronunciation points consolidated, the lesson carries on to further grammar exercise of freer nature. In our following part, there will be a lightning round of questions made, asked answered by Ss to warm them up and have them revise the previous grammar and pronunciation points. Then Some ideas will be elicited from pictures in the reading part and Ss will be directed to do the first reading task and after feedback in pairs and class they will be asked to discuss a couple of more questions about the text. Afterwards, The idea of time prepositions will be elicited through the next exercise and then they will be given time to sort a few frequency adverbs from most to least frequent and they will also be given some sentences to personalise about themselves by using the right frequency words. Based on their answers the appropriate feedback will be provided.

Materials

Abc Audio Script, Gap Fill task, Sentence Prompts, Reading Script, Matching and Gap Fill Tasks

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice on present simple for 3rd person singular subjects in addition to skimming and scanning for gist and detail alongside clarifying the use of time prepositions and frequency adverbs and having Ss practise them

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable Ss to make their own sentences in positive and negative forms using the grammar points as well as allowing them to determine the frequency of their routines by means of prepositions of time and frequency adverbs in addition to having them think about being a generally successful person in life

Procedure

Audio Script Check (20-25 minutes) • To have Ss discover the grammatical elements used in present simple for 3rd person singular subjects and allow them realise the difference in the number of syllables between the verbs used in the text

Ss will be asked to look at the audio script and the first target sentence will be written on the board. Then they will scan the script individually to find all the examples of such sentences and discuss whether they are positive or negative in pairs and there will be a WC feedback. Afterwards, Ss will be asked to remember what they can about the celebrity and a couple of sentences will be put on the board then more sentences with various verbs will be elicited and Ss are given the gap-fill task to have a clear idea to understand the rules. The pronunciation points and the secondary grammar rules ( pluralisation of countable nouns and use of gerunds in Like/ dislike sentences) are accentuated while giving feedback. Next, the Ss will be directed to freer practice in which they will individually make true or false sentences about themselves using the prompts and then discuss them in pairs to check whether they are true.

Reading and Vocabulary (20-25 minutes) • To allow Ss skim and scan for main ideas and detail across text as well as teaching them how to use time and frequency words and phrases

At first, Ss are asked do a round of quick-fire questions and answers starting with "Do you like" and replied to by "Yes, I do." or " No, I don't." then the pictures in the text are used to elicit ideas regarding them by means of purposeful questions. the questions will be worked on in pairs and after the feedback, in their pairs again, they will be asked to match the reading sentences to the pictures. then there will be a class feedback. In the following part, Ss are asked to reflect on the reading by looking at a couple of questions and have a group discussion after which there will be group and class feedback. At the beginning of the vocabulary lesson, Ss will be asked to complete 5 phrases by using the suitable preposition of time in their pairs and feedback will be given by asking them to check their answers via the reading which will be checked once more through WC feedback. In our next stage, I will have Ss look at some cards with frequency adverbs on them and they will try to find where they belong on the line drawn between always and never. Then there will be WC feedback and Ss will be given an individual gap-fill task to personalise sentences by using the right adverb of frequency and they will work in pairs to compare answers. Here, Ss will be asked where frequency adverbs are placed in the sentences; the right answers are elicited and explained. Finally, they will switch partners to use 3rd person singular grammar form through telling their new partners about their previous ones. There will be class feedback afterwards.
