Description

In this lesson ss will be introduced to functional language - agreeing and disagreeing looking at global issues. They will look at controversial statements as well as global issues such as Alcohol being illegal, female ss are better than male ss or dogs make better companions than cats etc. and they will have to agree or disagree.

Main Aims

  • Functional language - agreeing and disagreeing

Subsidiary Aims

  • speaking about issues and decide whether to agree or disagree

Procedure

Lead in/ engage ss (3-5 minutes) • Set the context

Greetings T will show ss pictures of people at social gatherings and try to elicit what people do at social gatherings. (discuss issues) Ask ss what people talk about at social gatherings. (family, work, news, events, changes, sports, general issues.) T will brainstorm and write on the WB. T will try to elicit the word ISSUES and write it on the WB.

Warmer/vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • Introduce important lexis for the functional language

T. will elicit issues people talk about at social gatherings such as global issues briefly, (poverty, news, education, global warming, internet,) Ask ss the question Is throwing litter a good thing? why? Is it good to hunt animals? Are women better ss than men? Try to elicit the words agree and disagree Write agree and disagree on the WB.

Introduce functional language (5-7 minutes) • Check and teach functional exponents to ss

Chest the HO and tell ss that there are phrases A-H and they fit in the relevant boxes below - agree, partly agree, disagree and strongly disagree. work in pairs and fill in what you think fits in the right box. You have 3 minutes. Monitor while ss attempt the exercise Identify problem phrases that ss might have difficulty with and write them on the WB Draw a box on the WB with the four headings - agree, partly agree, disagree, strongly disagree. Distribute functional exponents and make ss stick them on the WB in the correct box. Get WC FB and provide answer key. CCQs How do you partly disagree with someone? ho would you strongly disagree with someone? Answer key: 1/2/3 C,D,F. 4/5. A,G 6/7 B,E 8. H

A role of the dice (8-10 minutes) • Practice the use of agree and disagree. Semi controlled

Put ss in groups of 4 and tell them we will play a game. Choose a heading and then role the dice. Explain the rules to ss. One person must role the dice and if they get an even number the group must agree and if they get a odd number the group must disagree. Give an example by taking a sentence then read to the class, role the dice if its a odd or even number get the class to agree or disagree accordingly. Ss must take it turn rolling the dice. ICQs what happens if u get a odd number after rolling the dice? What do you do when you get a statement from the pile? Make them play for 4 minutes and make sure everyone gets a chance to role the dice and get to agree and disagree. Monitor while ss play the game. Ask ss if they enjoyed the game... Get FB and if necessary write difficult vocab on the WB and give examples of meaning if necessary.

Disappearing dialogue (8-10 minutes) • Controlled speaking

Give ss the HO and tell them to look at the conversation and practice using the dialogue in pairs and tell them they have to choose a topic like forest fires, health, or any thing they think is relevant. They have 3 minutes. CCQ: is the dialogue about agreement or disagreement? Write the dialogue on the WB and tell ss to come to the front of the WB and split them in to 2 groups. Group A and B. Make group A say the sentence and then make group B say the sentence. Omit a few words and then swap and this time make group A say what group B said vice versa and keep omitting words about 5 times to drill the functional language.

Semi controlled discussion (5-7 minutes) • speaking practice

Chest the HO and tell ss to look at the sentences on page 123 and read carefully and working in small groups of 4 discuss whether you agree, partly agree, disagree or strongly disagree. compare your opinions with each other. Monitor while ss discuss Get WC FB.

Discussion (7-8 minutes) • Free speaking practice

Introduce a controversial topic to ss and discuss as a WC. Encourage STT and make ss agree or disagree and ask questions as to why they agree on something and ask why they disagree.
