Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a role-play about bargaining in the context of shopping.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about bargening in the context of shopping

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- Show some pictures of the flea market and a yard sale. 2- Ask them what do they think this place is and does it sell new or used items? 3- In those markets; can I ask for lower prices? (bargain) 4- Discuss in pairs what was the last time you bargained to buy something.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

1-Tell the ss that they will listen to a conversation between a buyer and a seller, did she buy the lamp? for same price or lower? 2- What is happening in this conversation? (bargaining) 3- Chest the handout of another conversation about bargaining and ask the ss to put the conversation in the right order. 4-Give the answer-key.

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1- Ask the ss how would they ask for lower prices as a customer. Write on the board ways to lower the price (how about $10?, will you take $10?, would you take $10?) 2- Ask the ss how would they suggest another price as a seller. Write on the board ways to suggest another price;(you can have it/them for $15, I'll let you have it/them for $15, I'll give it/them to you for $15)

Productive Task(s) (12-13 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Preparation: Go through how to bargain: -Ask for price (how much is this/are these?) -Bargain for lower price (would be already on the board under 'asking for lower price') -Reach a middle-ground ( would be already on the board under 'suggesting another price') Role-play: Chest the sale items in the handout telling the ss the following instructions; - Divide the class in pairs (A-B) - Pair A is a customer Pair B is a seller. - Pair B will put the prices on the price tag and pair A will bargain till they reach a middle ground. - Open class feedback.
