Description

In this lesson, students will study the past of the verb "to be" using "there". They will study the positive, negative and question form. Then they will pratice the use of them both through exercises. And finally a small activity to get used to it.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of simple past of the verb "to be" using "there" in the context of objects

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of furniture and objects in the context of describing places

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start my lesson by talking about the changes that happened in the classroom at the beginning of the session. I will ask students to give me examples of what changed.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will then explain the use of "there was / were". Write the form on the board. Give positive, negative and question forms. Clarify the contraction form. I will give students an exercise to make sure they understood.

Controlled Practice (10-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

We will move then to the next exercise. Students will take time to answer it. Compare their answers. Check the answers on the back.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

For more practice, students will answer the last exercise mixed with other verbs to make sure they understood the simple tense. Students take time to answer and compare their aswers with their partners. Correct the answers on the board.

Free Practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will move to freer practice. First activity show students some pictures for 30 sec and then tell me what they saw using the TL. Use 3 pictures. Students say as much as they can about what they saw Next activity, get some volunteers to get out of the class for a while. Make some changes in the room. And let each person guess the changes.
