Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about problems in the context of relationships

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a problems in the context of relationships

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- Show ss a picture with 4 couples that seem to have a problem in their relationship. Ask ss 'What do you think of this picture'. Give them 2 minutes to discuss in pairs. 2- Ask 3 ss what they found out. 3- Ask them 'Do you think that having problems with our relationships is a good thing or a bad thing?'. Ask two students. 4- Get them to discuss this in pairs.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach this vocabulary: - Fall out - A solicitor - Pretend - Persuade - Take over - Cope Following the ECDW order.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

- Get ss to read the letters for gist 'Choose a title for each letter'. - Tell them you have 8 minutes to choose an appropriate title for each letter, titles are provided in the handout. - ICQ (Are you going to read quickly or slowly?) - Let them do the first one then ask for a demonstration. - Get them to check in pairs in two minutes. - Whole class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Get students to read the 9 points provided and then they have to read all the letters to be able to match each point with the particular letter. - Give them 8 minutes to read the letter and to do the task. - Check in pairs. - Whole class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Get them to work individually to suggest a possible solution for each problem. They should write it down. Give them 5 minutes to do so. - Get them to discuss their suggested solutions in pairs. in 5 minutes.
