Description

Students will discuss motivation in the work place, discerning between incentive schemes and cash rewards and identifying which they prefer. Students identify and define vocabulary related to motivating factors in the work place and listen to employees discuss what they enjoy or don't enjoy about their office's work reward scheme

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about reward schemes in the context of work life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-15 minutes) • To build rapport with students

Make basic conversation and see how everyone is doing

Starting Point (5-10 minutes) • Get students to consider what motivates them at work

Students discuss what is most important about getting through the work day and what the most important factors are for enjoying work and completing tasks.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students discuss the differences between a 'reward' and an 'incentive' and discuss how their company motivates them to do well at their job.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students read aloud. According to the text: What is an incentive scheme? What opinion does the author have about incentive schemes vs cash rewards?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students answer questions about specific details within the text, particularly about the advantages and disadvantages regarding incentive schemes and cash rewards.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students examine the vocabulary in the text and define the key terms, relating them to what was read.

While Listening (8-12 minutes) • Achieve gist of what speakers are saying

Listen to texts and answer questions about work incentives.

Post Listening (6-10 minutes) • Explore the different vocabulary regarding material and non-material benefits

Look through terms from the audio and identify them either as material or non-material

Extra Practice / HW (8-12 minutes) • Give students extra practice with what they've learned

Go through the exercises in the practice file to reinforce new vocabulary
