Copy of Grammar: Clauses of contrast and purpose
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn how use seven conjunctions properly. We will begin with a warmer where I will listen out for and, or, but. I will write these on the board and begin a quick discussion about conjunctions and what role they play in our language. I will then have Ss do 9a page 85 3a. This exercise is the listening from Bade’s lesson, so they know the information already, they are just practicing putting it in correct sentences. After that Ss will organize conjunctions based on whether we use them for purpose or contrast. Then, I will go into a deeper clarification phase, where I will explain how to use each conjunction and what the form is when using it. Then we will do a more difficult controlled practice, where Ss will be practicing which conjunction to use, instead of just picking the clause. Lastly, we will do a free practice where Ss will be executives and pick an ad for a marketing campaign.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of clauses of contrast and purpose in the context of advertising.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of advertising.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will look at a clever ad and then have a brief talk in PW to discuss what they like about the ad and who the ad targets. T will monitor and listen for Ss use of conjunctions, specifically, and, or, and but. I will write these on the board and we will discuss the function of the words and how they help us in speaking and writing.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss will do exercise 3a, which is a continuation of the listening lesson from Bade's class. Here they will select the correct clause from sentences they have heard several times. They will check their answers in PW, then a quick WCFB.

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

After completing exercise 3a, Ss will have to write each conjunction in either a contrast category or a purpose category. This will highlight the grammar of today and they will see the function each conjunction plays in English.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will move through prepared slides of each conjunction (TL) and will elicit grammar rules by having Ss identify the grammar in each clause. Together we will create rules. I will also clarify meaning, form, and pronunciation of each of the 7 conjunctions we are learning today.

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

After clarification, Ss will then do 4a where they have select one of two conjunctions. This is a little bit easier for them, but I feel it's important for my staging so that they can build their knowledge of this grammar in an accurate way. They will work alone, check in PW, and then we'll do WCFB. (If I don't have time, I will skip.)

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss will now move into a semi-controlled practice where they will have to rewrite sentences given to them using a different conjunction. They will have to add words, delete words, and decide how to use each conjunction correctly. They will work alone, check in PW, and then we'll do WCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will do a role play where they are executives at a board meeting for Fedex. They wil have a debate and discuss which print ad will be the best for their American marketing campaign. They will need to contrast two ads, and each character in the role play is given a clear purpose. This will give them opportunities to use the grammar in a free, fluent, and natural way. I will monitor for errors, and write them on the board. We will do WCFB and I will get a few sentences using the grammar from the Ss before wrapping up.
