Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of hospital lexis in the context of health
  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using dialogues in the context of hospital

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a dialogue in the context of hospital
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a dialogue in the context of hospital

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks SS to look at the picture of a group of doctors in the book and asks who they are. Then, T asks SS where the doctors are. After eliciting the words ''doctors'' and ''hospital'', T shows a picture of a hospital and asks who else works in a hospital. T expects SS to use previously learned vocabulary in page 2 such as ''nurse, midwife, EMT etc''. If further clarification is required, T turns back to page 2 for revision

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T then shows a photo of a school and asks who work here. Ss try to answer with their background knowledge if possible. After some answers, T shows a few pictures of school personnel and elicits the job names. T then shows photos of a bank, factory and company and asks the SS to look up job names that are related to each building with the question '' Who works in a company?'' and ''Who works in a school?''. Ss are given 3-5 minutes to come up with some jobs with their partners. Ss give out their answers and T writes some of them on the board and clarifies the meaning by showing pictures on the internet.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T writes the parts of a school on the board, like '' classes, offices, cafeteria''. T then asks the Ss if they know any part of the hospital. T tries to elicit some answers and writes them on the board. Then, T points at the pictures in the vocabulary section and asks the Ss to match the names with the pictures with their partners. T asks some Ss for their answers and errors are corrected on the board. Then T asks Ss to complete the sections B and C with a new partner. Answers for the B section are given one by one from different students and in the case of an error, T asks the class to correct them. Section C answers are given through an audio file. Ss listen to the audio file and check their answers. At the end, as WC, pictures are matched with the sentences.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss listen to the 1.5 audio file and fill the blanks in the dialogues. Answers are checked by having three different partners read the dialogues loudly. T asks the Ss to match the pictures with the dialogues and answer the T/F section. Answers are checked as WC. T then asks the Ss what they study and which job they want in the hospital. Ss give out their answers and T tells the Ss to change the names of the people and the jobs according to themselves and do the dialogues with their partners. T demonstrates with a student how to do it and gives 3 minutes to the Ss to do it with their partners.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T points at the question ''Where is the lab'' in the 2nd dialogue. T writes ''Where is the cafeteria?'' on the board. Ss try to give answers and T writes ''It's on the 8th floor'' and ''It's near the terrace''. T clarifies they can answer with these two forms to talk about the location of a place. Then, T points at the first dialogue where Jenny says ''I'm a nurse''. T asks a student ''Are you a nurse?'' and tries to get the answer ''No, I'm a student''. T then shows that they can talk about their departments by saying ''I'm a nursing student - I'm a physiotherapy student etc.'' T goes over the way greetings and farewells are done in the dialogues such as ''Hi, Hello, Nice to meet you, See you, Bye''. T explains that Ss will stand up and talk to random classmates, just like in the dialogue, but this time they will use their real information and ask about a place in the university building. T does a demonstration with a strong student and asks the class to mingle.
