Description

In this lesson, grammar topic Simple Present Questions is covered through gap-filling and word order exercises. It also includes a listening part with while-listening gap fills, followed by speaking practice where students interview one another and give oral summary of their findings.

  • To provide clarification and practice of Present Simple Questions in the context of university life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accurate speaking practice of present simple questions and answers

Procedure

Warm-up/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss to discuss these questions in pairs: Do you want to study abroad? Why/not? Which countries do you want to study in? What do you want to study?

Clarification (5 minutes) • To introduce the form of present simple questions and short answers

Write the form of Present Simple questions on the board and illustrate with the sentences in the warm-up.

Practice (10 minutes) • To provide controlled written practice of the target language

Ss complete exercises 6, 7a and 7b (gap-filling and word order) individually, then get class check.

Speaking practice (5 minutes) • To provide further controlled speaking practice of TL

Ss ask each other selected questions from exercises 6 and 7a.

Listening (10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Ss fill in the gaps while listening. In the first listening they focus on the SPT questions. In the second, the answers. They check for details in pairs.

Productive Task: Speaking (5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss change partners, and in pairs, interview each other. They give oral summary to the teacher.
