Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about the biography of one of the most famous tennis players in the context of sport. At the end of the lesson, Ss wil be talking about this sport using the specific words.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of the words related to tennis and feelings of fear in the context of sport

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will work in groups and discuss the questions written on the page, 38. The teacher asks them to read the questions and to discuss with their friends.

Pre- Teaching (3-5 minutes) • To introduce students with new vocabularies related to the context

The teacher will elicit the meanings.

Pre-Reading (0-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will read the passage for purpose. Before reading the extract, the students will know what kind of thing they are going to learn about him. Look at the photos of Andre Agassi and read the text below. You will learn about his career, his personal problems, his reasons for his fame, his marriage and children.

Speaking (5 minutes) • to let Ss talk about the topic.

Teacher tells them to work in groups and discuss. first of all, you need to read the questions and discuss them. Later, read the extract from Agassi's autobiography and answer the questions.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • reading for details

Students read the text and mark the statements in exercise 5. Students should underline the part of the text that gives the answer to each sentence. Ss will work individually, then check answers in pairs.

Post-Reading (7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students need to think before they answer. The teacher wants Ss to circle the words related to tennis in color, and to underline the words related to Andre's feelings of fear in black. Students work individually, then compare answers in pairs. The teacher goes through the answers with the class, checking to understand the words.
