Description

In this lesson, students practice listening for gist and detailed in the context of places in a town. The lesson starts with a question about what they see in photos. There are tasks of listening for gist and detail in the context of some cities. As a production activity, discussions take place Students will choose the best city for themselves by looking at their features.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show photographs of three different cities and ask them talk to their partners about what they see in them. T: Now, look at the pictures. What do you see? Stand up and talk to your partner. Students work in pairs for about three minutes. Whole class discussion takes place. Elicit some answers from the students..

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach some new vocabulary items and elicits the answers from the students; "Station, pub, village" Drill new vocabulary items chorally and individually. Focus on word stress. elicit the form. Prepare students for the main text and ask them to guess what city the people are talking about. Students work individually in this activity for one minute. T: Guess what city are the people talking about? write some of the guesses on the board.

While-/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Students listen to the listening text individually and check their guesses. Discuss the answers with their partners. W/c FB takes place. Ask for justifications of the answers. T: "Listen to the recording and check your guesses."

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Give students the hand-out 2 and make sure that students read the questions. Students work individually. Students listen to the text twice. Students check their answers with their partners. Put answer key on the wall. Ask for justifications of some answers. T: Which conversation talks about these things? Listen and match the sentences with the correct dialogues.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Show the pictures of the cities with their descriptions from ex 3a again. Put students into pairs. Ask students to discuss which place they would like to visit.. Students discuss their answers Re-pair the students again and ask them to talk about their previous partner's answer. Get ideas from the class during feedback. T: Look at the places again. Read about them. Which place would you like to visit? Why? Talk to your partner for 2 mins.
