In this lesson, students will practice their listening skills in the context of free time activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in listening for gist and details in the context of free time activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in writing for accuracy and speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T sets the context by showing the pictures of two people and asks students to read an e-mail (HO1) and find the names of these people in the photos and who writes the e-mail. Students read the e-mail individually. They check their answers with their partners. W/c FB takes place.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T pre-teaches some new vocabulary items and elicits the answers from the students. Drill new vocabulary items chorally and individually. Focus on word stress. elicit the form. -T prepares students for the main text and asks them to guess where is Trevor and who is Polly. Students work individually for this activity. Ss compare their ideas in pairs. Students listen to the introduction part of the listening text and check their guesses. W/c FB takes place.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks students to listen to the first part of the text and choose the correct answers.(HO2) Ss work individually for this task. They check their answers with their new partners. T nominates some students to choose the correct answer on the whiteboard by giving different coloured board markers. W/c FB takes place. ICQ: Are you working together or individually?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T shows some free time activities on the whiteboard and gives HO3. T asks students to guess which activities Trevor do in his free time and put a tick for those activities. Ss listen to the text individually. Ss check their guesses with their partners. W/c Feedback is carried out. ICQ: Do we put a tick or cross?

Post-Reading/Listening (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T gives HO4 and asks students to write free time activities near the correct pictures. Students work individually for this activity first. Then, T asks students to write a question for each activity. After they finish writing the questions T asks students to stand up and ask these questions to their friends. Ss answer the questions and write the names of their friends next to the questions. w/c FB takes place.
