Description

This lesson presents past simple and present perfect verb tenses in the context of changes in Vietnam. It also presents expressions that are commonly used with these verb tenses.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of past simple and present perfect in the context of students' hometown, school, company and country

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of changes in students' hometown, school, company and country

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-10 minutes) • To review vocabulary and engage students

Students play Memory in pairs. The teacher elicits the answers from the class.

Exposure (10-10 minutes) • To provide context for the grammar through text

With books closed board the sentences used as examples on pg 27 of ML Intermediate

Clarification (15-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the past simple and present perfect tenses

Elicit other examples of sentences for each tense and discuss why they should be that tense and not the other.

Controlled Practice (15-15 minutes) • To concept check and to prepare students for free practice

Students fill in the blanks with the correct verb form using the words that are in parenthesis. Students peer check and then the teacher elicits the answers from the whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (20-20 minutes) • To further concept check and to prepare students for free practice

Students mingle and find people who match the descriptions. They write down what was said and who said it. Teacher monitors and gives feedback to class

Free Practice (20-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students discuss in groups of 3-4 changes that have happened in their hometown, school, company and country. Each group then shares with the class what changes discussed. Feedback is then given by peers and the teacher. (Adapted from "C" on pg 26 of ML Intermediate.)

Extra Activity - Tell Me Game • To give students extra practice using the past simple and present perfect verbs
