Main Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in giving suggestions in the context of special days/birthday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in speaking for fluency and writing for accuracy

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T provides a context of buying a present to a close friend and asks students to discuss their ideas about what to buy. Then, w/c Fb takes place and ss give some "advice" to their T.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T delivers HO1 (a dialogue) to students and asks them to fill in the blanks with the words. Ss work individually. Ss check their answers with their partners. T puts answers keys to different places in the classroom. Ss stand up and check their answers. w/c FB takes place.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: T sticks some symbols on the board such as "(-) (+) (?)" and gives some suggestion phrases and answers (HO2) from the dialogue such as "what shall we..., let's ..." to the students asks them to match the sentences with the symbols. Then, T asks and elicits some answers from the students to check the meaning. Form: T shows three suggestion phrases on the board and wants ss to fill in the blanks. Students work with their partners. T elicits answers from different pairs. T asks for the parts of speech of the target language and elicits the general rule from the students. W/c FB takes place. Pronunciation: Write some modal suggestion phrases on the board. Modal the target language by focusing on the sentence stress. Drill the modal sentences chorally and individually. Ask students where is the sentence stress and elicit the answers from the students.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives HO3 to the Ss wants them to fill in the gaps with the correct words. Students work individually for this activity. Ss change their partners first and then check their answers with their new partners. Then they take turns and read the dialogue to each other like a role play. T sticks answer keys on the walls and he asks students to stand up and check their answers. w/c FB is carried out.

Free Practice (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives HO4 to the students and asks them to write dialogue in the context of buying a present to their friend by using suggestion phrases. Students work in pairs for this activity. Then they practice dialogues with their partners. T pairs students up within a group of four students and asks them to read their dialogues each other. T nominates some students to come to the board and asks them to read their dialogues. w/c FB takes place. T gives delayed feedback.
