Description

In this lesson, students practice listening for gist and detailed in the context of jobs and money. The lesson starts with a discussion about different salaries. There is a matching task and listening for gist and detail in the context of jobs and salaries. As a production activity, discussions take place Students compare jobs and salaries in Britain and Turkey and share their ideas about the fairness of the salaries.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with practice in listening for gist, specific information and details in the context of jobs and money.

  • To provide students with practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Deliver the jumbled pictures and salaries of specific jobs and ask students to match them. Students work in pairs for about three minutes. Whole class discussion takes place. Elicit some answers from different partners, but do not give correct answers.

While-Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Show the pictures of the jumbled jobs and salaries and two questions on the WB. Ask students to read the questions and make sure that students listen for the general understanding of the text by asking ICQs Do you need to understand every detail? No. Students check their answers with their partners. Whole-class feedback is carried out

While-Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening tasks

Deliver the hand-out ask students read the questions in advance. Make sure that students for finding specific information about jobs and salaries. Students work individually and, then check their answers with their partners. Nominate students to come to the board and write the answers.

While-Listening #3 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Deliver the question in ex. 2.3 and ask students to read it before listening. Ask a ICQ to make sure that students listen for the specific jobs. Are you going to listen to all the jobs? No. Which jobs will you focus on? Doctors, footballers, senior directors, pilots. Students work individually. Pair students up. Students check their answers with new partners. Whole-class feedback. Ask for justification.

While-Listening #4 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Give students the hand-out and make sure that students read them. Students work individually. Students listen to the text twice. Students check their answers with their partners. Put answer keys on the wall. Ask if students have any questions.

Post-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Show the picture of jobs and salaries on the WB. Put students into groups of three students. Ask students to discuss the jobs and salaries in Britain and compare the equivalent ones in Turkey. Students discuss the fairness of the salaries. Whole-class feedback takes place. Get ideas from different groups.
