Main Aims

  • To provide specific inforamtion task (scanning), detailed and deduction practice of a listening task in a context of urban legends

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a gist reading task and a speaking task for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context ,engage students and activate their schemta

play a short 1 minute video about one of the most scary urban legend in Turkey ,watch the video ,work in pair and tell each other what the video was about .have you heard similar stories to share with class ,if so ask two of them to share

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pr-teaching of the new words ,(conveying the meaning,eliciting ,CCQs,oral model ,drilling and boarding ) show listening part pictures to convey the meaning and elicit (the outback,an insurance claim,sue someone,a bug ,insecticide) give the reading text to read individually for a gist task and choose a title for the text,do peer check ,give class feed back on a slide in a sentence and check their understanding with some questions (CCQs) (are they funny stories?yes-are they surprising ?yes - are they scary?yes-are all of them true ?no -are they based on actual events ?yes-have are they shown more than they really are to make them ore interesting?yes ,give oral model(URBAN LEGENDS ARE INTERESTING TO BE HEARD.) ,drill chorally and individually and finally board the word(collocation) show the picture of three legend stories and ask them to work and predict what each story will be about .they work in pairs and predict the story ,monitor and help when needed

While-Listening 1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

tell them that they are going to listen to a listening part including three stories ,listen and write a title for each story ,do peer check and put the name of the stories on the board to check their answers as a classroom feedback . As a more specific task in listening ,ask them to listen again and check their prediction whether their prediction was correct or not .

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

provide them with some more challenging task and ask them to listen more carefully and answer the questions ,do peer check ,monitor then each pair will be given the answer sheet to check their answers as a C/F.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

put them in groups of three ,each group will be given the prompts of the stories ,have them work and try to retell the story for each other in groups and preferably each person one story ,monitor and help when needed ,and take note to give them delayed correction and reformulation as a final fun questions to put an end ask them to guess which story is true and which is not ,each group to guess one story and finally they can see the right answer on the board
