Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about the most dangerous things while driving a car in the context of an interview with a safety expert

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of dangerous things causing car accidents

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Give Ss two photos and ask them to work in pairs and say what they can see in each. In pairs, Ss look at the two photos and say what they can see in each. w/c feedback

Pre-teach vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by pre-teaching blocking vocab

Give them HO2.Show them the columns and ask the match the words in column A with their definitions in column B their definitions. Ss match the words with their definitions. Peer check Write the answers on WB

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening tasks

Give Ss HO3 allowing 2 mins to read the text and answer the question with a partner. In pairs Ss read the text and answer the question w/c FB (by getting a show of hands for each one and writing the top three on the board) Play the audio for Ss to number the activities 1-7 w/c FB

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Give Ss HO4, show them the columns and ask them to listen again and find out why each activity is dangerous. ICQ Play the audio, pause where necessary to give Ss time to write the answers. In pairs discuss their answers (Peer check) Play the audio again if necessary Give them AK to check their answers. (HO4b)

Post Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned by doing a speaking task

Give them HO5 ask them to read the sentences and check if they agree and cross if they disagree and think of one ore two reasons Give Ss HO6 to categorize the useful language for the speaking task. Put Ss in groups of 3 and Give them HO7 to discuss if they agree or disagree with the statements. Other Ss in the group listen and write down the speaker's answer. W/C FB
