Teaching Practice 3
Beginner - A1 level

Description

The TL of this lesson is possessive 's. Ss may be familiar with the TL, but they will need clarification and practice, with plenty of drilling to help with accuracy of form as well as pronunciation

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of possessive 's in the context of family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about possessive 's in the context of family

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the picture of Anni's family and ask the learners to guess who the people are and how they know each other. (Power Point: put the picture on the board). Instructions: Look at the picture. Who are they? Are they friends? Colleagues? Family? (Write their answers on the board if you want to).

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Present learners with reading passage (T. 4.1) (Put the picture on the board) (Chesting and give instructions) Instructions: Read the text (Give the handout) Have learners do ex. 2 p. 25 (Put ex. 2 on the board) (Chesting and give instructions) Instructions: Do ex. 2. (Demostration: no. 1) Pair-check FB. I adapted both the reading text and ex. 2 p. 25. As for the reading text, I decided to eliminate the possessive adjectives students are not familiar with and I turned them into the ones they know. Other forms of possessive adjectives could distracted them and in this way they can focus on the different forms of 's. Same criteria for ex. 2p. 25, I eliminated the questions with unfamiliar possessive adjectives and I turned into a matching activity.

Highlighting (2-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Make them read the text again. Instructions: read the text again. 's = 1) is 2) possessive Pair check. 's = is She's married. She's a doctor. He's a bank manager. She's at Camden High School. He's at the University of Westminster. 's = possessive Annie's hospital is in the centre of town. Jim' is Annie's husband. Jim's office is in the centre of the town.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Start with something they already know. She’s Annie = _________ name’s Annie. He’s Jim = ________ name’s Jim. Then sentences from the text. Annie’s hospital is in the centre of town = _______ hospital is in the centre of the town. Jim’s office is the centre of town = ________ office is in the centre of the town. Visuals can help. CCQs Is this her hospital? Is this Annie's hospital? Is this Jim's hospital? Is this her office? Is this his office? Is this Jim's office? Make a few more example with the students name and possessions. (Is this his pen? / Is this Tarlan's pen? / Is this Sibel's pen? Is this his pen? Is this her pen?)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Chesting and give instructions: fill in the gaps. Give handouts. _____ name’s Jim. Annie_____ husband is Jim. Annie______ a doctor. Jim’s office______ in the centre of the town. She____ married. _____ hospital____ in the centre of the town. He____ a bank manager. What____ her job? Pair-check. w/c FB: write the answers on the board.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Information gap (Pair work or small groups) Show the two different handouts to the students. Instructions: ask the question and write the names. Give handouts. Monitor. w/c FB - error correction.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Guess who. Do a demonstration. Write on the board. He's from Azerbaijan. He's a video director. He likes hamburgers. His shirt is (write the colour). Who is he?
