Description

In this lesson students will skim and scan a text in the context of "cosmetic surgery" and they will also improve their reading skills by doing group works, matching cut-outs and discussion. And the students will learn new words about cosmetic surgery and will use them in the discussion time.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about cosmetic surgery in the context of doctor and patients’ chating

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a fore and against discussion in the context of cosmetic surgery

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T will attach the celebrities’ pictures before and after cosmetic surgery and the T and Ss will talk about them and Ss will share their ideas with the lass, and the teacher will also teach the hard new words in the reading part while they are talking about the pictures. Then the teacher will give the student colored papers and ask them to sit with their partner in the same color. Then the T will give the Ss the survey in page 57 and they should do it in pairs and discuss about their survey together.

Pre-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

After doing the survey Ss will have the first paragraph of the reading and they will have time to read it individually. The T will write Ss’ names on pieces of paper and ask one or two of the Ss to choose some names randomly and after that the chosen Ss will give a summarize the paragraph and also say their ideas about it.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The T will give the Ss small pieces of paper and each of the Ss choose one of them and open it in each piece of paper A or B or C is written and after that the class will be divided into 3 groups (group A/B/C). Then the T will give each group two packs of cut-outs and the Ss will match them together. (The Ss should match the patients’ problems with their right solutions.) After that the Ss will have the answer keys.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

This time the T will give the A/BC groups ‘’true/false’’ hand-outs according to the reading. The Ss will scan the text carefully and after that they will do the hand-outs in their groups. Then the WC will check the answers together.

Post-Reading (13-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

At this stage the class is divided into two groups, one group is fore and another group is against of cosmetic surgery. The Ss will have 6 minutes to talk in their groups and be prepared to convince the opposite groups the group that talk better and be able to convince the other group is the winner.
