Description

In this lesson, the students revise and practise the use of auxiliary verbs in the context of education and schools.

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of auxiliary verbs in the context of education and schools

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about taking a university course in the context of education and schools.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Taboo game. Ss in two teams have to guess the word presented by one of their teammates. The one presenting the word canot say the word on the cut out, but ahs to descibe it. The team with the most correct answers wins. Each round is limited to one minute. Monitor: Pay attention to any misunderstood words. FB: clarify the misunderstood words.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ex 3 p.10 Students are reminded about the listening in the previous lesson. Student listen to the exercise and fill the gaps with the words. Students compare their answers in pairs. w/c FB with two students reading the dialogue.

Highlighting and Clarification (meaning and form) (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language, to clarify meaning and form

Ex 5 p.11 Ss work individually to match the uses with the auxiliary verbs in the dialogue from exercise 3 (dotted underlined). Ss check in pairs. Whole class FB and T gives additional explanations. Ex 4 p.11 Ss identify the tenses in exercise 3 (4a). Ss identify the two verb forms without an auxiliary verb (4b). Ss complete the rules (4c) Ss compare the rules in pairs. Monitoring w/c FB and T gives additional explanations.

Clarification (pronunciation) (4-5 minutes) • To clarify pronunciation of the target language.

Ex 6a p.11 Ss read the sentences in a and b. T asks what the sentences in a have in common. Ss identify the contractions. Ss check in pairs. Monitoring w/c FB

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ex 8 p.11 Ss work individually to shorten the sentences. Ss check in pairs. Monitor w/c FB

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss in groups get a cut out with a situation. Ss create a short conversation between two people and include as many auxiliary verbs as they can. Ss role play their conversation in groups of four. Monitoring (good language and language to be corrected) and helping if needed. Delayed FB. Delayed correction (good language and language to be corrected) .
